Residential — Halifax, Nova Scotia

Bay Turret Residence

The bay is the test in this roof. Its covering is cut into narrow radiating facets that converge above the window, each hip mitred into the next, and the courses have to hold their line across every one of them.

Behind it the main roof is far simpler: long hipped planes in the same charcoal tile over white painted brick. The contrast between the two is the subject of the photograph.

Twilight Gable House

Two gabled volumes under one dark metal tile roof, photographed at dusk. Roof, fascias and rainwater goods share a single dark tone, so against pale render the whole roof edge reads as one line.
